As Democrats continue to add to their “blue tsunami” of midterm victories, President Donald Trump blamed the opposition and the American public for the selloff that swept Wall Street on Thursday.
Led by sharp losses in artificial intelligence-related stocks, the decline erased the previous session’s strong gains.
The S&P 500 plunged 4.4 percent, its biggest one-day decline since April 2025, while the tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite fell 5.5 percent.
“The stock market had one of the worst days in history based on election results,” Trump wrote on Truth Social. “Remember, it wasn’t the Republicans, it was the Democrats.” In a follow-up, he told the electorate: “You only have yourselves to blame!
Stocks regained some ground Friday morning, with the S&P 500 rising 0.70 percent and the Nasdaq rising 1.28 percent.
With votes still being counted in the Alaska and Mississippi Senate elections and other contests, Democrats have secured a 54-44 majority in the Senate and are projected to win 253 seats in the House to the Republican Party’s 157.
The findings have fueled a smoldering civil war within the Trump administration as insiders scramble to assign blame. The president is reportedly sounding out his advisers about the potential firing of Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, while Secretary of State Marco Rubio is reportedly under “resignation watch.”

Republican lawmaker says there are ‘a lot of questions about Hegseth’
Rep. James Comer, the Kentucky Republican who chairs the House Oversight Committee, offered no assurances of support for Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth on Friday.
Democrats have said they will push to impeach Hegseth, and administration officials will consider ousting him.
“What do you want to see Pete Hegseth do?” » a NewsNation host asked Comer.
“That will be a decision that President Trump will have to make,” Comer responded. “But I can tell you with a high level of confidence that there are a lot of questions about Hegseth. We have no idea what the strategy is in Iran. Nobody is happy with Iran, and I think Republican voters are more unhappy about what’s happening in Iran than Democratic voters.”

Hegseth not even considered for Senate role as his administration’s possible escape hatch closes: report
Before the midterm elections, it was suggested that Pete Hegseth might make a run for Marsha Blackburn’s Tennessee Senate seat, assuming it becomes vacant when she wins her race to become the Volunteer State’s next governor, as a way to escape angry Democrats at the Capitol.
Blackburn actually won the governor’s mansion, as it happens, but Hegseth wouldn’t be in the running to replace her after all, leaving him stuck inside the Pentagon — unless Trump fired him.

El-Sayed has already found a topic he wants to work on with Trump
Senator-elect Abdul El-Sayed has already found something he wants to work on with President Donald Trump: cutting aid to Israel.
The Michigan Democrat, who has been an outspoken critic of Israeli leadership during the Gaza war, which he calls a genocide, supported Trump’s idea of cutting $4 billion in aid to Israel by the end of the year, saying he “would love to work with him to make that happen.”
“I don’t think we should continue to subsidize a foreign army that has done the worst things with our money,” El-Sayed told the hosts of the MS NOW show. Morning Joe THURSDAY.
“I actually don’t think we should continue to sell weapons to a country that is, once again, using our weapons to do horrible things. »

Hinojosa says data centers ‘must benefit Texans’
Gina Hinojosa, the newly elected governor of Texas, told CNN’s Jake Tapper that data centers have a place in her state, but only if they benefit residents and are not imposed on communities without proper laws and protections.
Trump’s insistence on their necessity and his indifference to the objections raised by rural voters may well have cost Republicans their support this week.
The president has already issued his first threat to Hinojosa, who will succeed Greg Abbott in January, over his border security.
