The Minnesota Vikings are facing a quarterback crisis: Carson Wentz starts Monday with Kyler Murray injured. Kevin O’Connell made it official: Wentz will start against the Buffalo Bills while Murray will recover from a hamstring strain suffered against the Detroit Lions. But is this a one-week stopgap or a gentle benching? On this episode of The real Forno showTyler Forness and Dave Stefano discuss what Wentz’s departure means, the growing frustration with O’Connell’s offensive scheme, the looming trade deadline and the JJ McCarthy situation that won’t go away. This is for all the Vikings fans looking for answers during a season that started 6-0 and now feels like it’s slipping through their fingers.
Tyler Forness doesn’t mince words about the state of the offense. After Wes Phillips publicly blamed players’ execution for the offensive struggles, Tyler hit back hard: “At some point, the execution is not up to the players, it’s up to the coaches.” He compared O’Connell to a brilliant physics teacher who failed to communicate with his students: “Who cares if you’re smart? The ones who design systems and run plays that get first downs, field goals, touchdowns – those are the smartest guys in the room. It’s time to put ego aside, Kevin.” The main problem is that O’Connell’s system requires anticipated throws to the middle of the field – throws that Kirk Cousins and Sam Darnold made regularly, but which Murray consistently refuses. As Tyler says: “The problem is not that he can’t see. The problem is that he can see and doesn’t throw it.” Meanwhile, Justin Jefferson is averaging fewer than seven targets per game, a number Tyler finds unacceptable considering Puka Nacua and Jaxon Smith-Njigba are seeing 12 targets per game elsewhere. On Wentz, Tyler is measured: “He’s good enough to keep you steady for a game or two. He’s in the top five backups I’d want.” But he is lucid about the ceiling: “Carson Wentz is who he is, and he’s been doing it for years now.”
