AG Blanche says license plate readers don’t affect Americans’ privacy

Attorney General of the United States Todd Blanche has voiced support for automated license plate readers and pushed back on privacy concerns that have pushed surveillance technology into the national spotlight.

Privacy advocates say the technology, which records license plate information captured by cameras scattered across the country, could be misused to track and monitor citizens without adequate mandates. One of the largest companies deploying the technology, Flock Safety, has faced increased scrutiny from lawmakers in recent months, prompting some governors and local governments must suspend its use.

Speaking at a news conference in Florida on Friday to announce a $74 million federal investment in the state, White called surveillance fears “disinformation.”

“The technology around license plate readers does not affect the privacy of American citizens,” the attorney general said. “It might one day, and if technology advances to the point where we need to look at it and find a way to solve this problem and reduce it, we should do that.”
