It has become abundantly clear that the NFL is delaying the reinstatement of 49ers wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk from the reserve/left team list. It’s also become abundantly clear that the 49ers are hoping to get some money out of Aiyuk before the league lets him return.
So it’s no surprise that Friday’s meeting between Aiyuk, agent Drew Rosenhaus and the 49ers didn’t resolve the situation.
“Hey, guys,” Rosenhaus said to a group of reporters who had been monitoring Friday’s meeting. “To be continued. We have no further statements at this time. But when we do, we’ll let you know.
The situation seems simple enough. Aiyuk probably owes the 49ers more than $13 million. It’s one thing for the 49ers to have the opportunity to pursue him for money; it’s another for the NFL and 49ers to delay his re-entry into the league until he transfers the funds.
This seems to be precisely where things stand. And the question is whether Aiyuk will be willing to make a deal with the 49ers to guarantee the possibility of returning to the NFL, with another team.
