All his life, Al Sager, 65, of Bay City, Michigan, has been single.
“You see relationships deteriorate and it’s like, ‘No, I don’t want that,'” Sager told CBS News. “…I was alone, but I wasn’t alone.”
Meanwhile, across town, Susan Guc, 76, felt the same way.
“If there was anyone out there, who would I really want?” Guc said. It turned out the answer was no one.
“And I was happy about it,” she said. “I really was.”
Guc worked as a nurse focusing solely on her patients. Sager was a truck driver who was always on the road. They were two of the most committed “uncommitted” in Bay City.
Until this week, when they got married. All these years of celibacy came to a surprising end, leaving those close to him in disbelief.
“We were all just shocked,” said one insider.
“I almost fell out of my chair,” said another. “I didn’t expect that.”
Guc explained: “It was just a coincidence.”
It all started a few years ago, according to Guc, when they both underwent heart procedures and were placed in the same cardiac rehabilitation program.
Guc was on a treadmill when she noticed Sager on an exercise bike. He didn’t notice anything, but she really liked his smile.
He didn’t realize it, so she hit him with a rock – literally. The word “smile” was engraved on the rock.
“Yes, she threw a rock at me to get my attention,” Sager said.
“That rock rocked,” Guc said.
She actually kind of reached out to him, but it really hit him.
“I thought she was trying to tell me, ‘Hey, you’re not smiling enough,'” Sager said. “…And I said, ‘Well, I better look into that more.’”
Today, Sager and Guc are all smiles and sending a message to anyone who thinks they’re too old to find their person.
“That’s what I thought, but look what happened to me,” Guc said.
Sager added: “Oh, absolutely, it’s never too late.”
