Two female basketball players make hoops for the wrong team

LAS CRUCES, N.M. (AP) — It was one of those days where players had trouble determining which direction the game was heading.

Or which basket was theirs.

New Mexico State and Northwestern State players each sank layups from the wrong side of the court Friday — a pair of point-blank miscues in women’s basketball that put their teams in the spotlight for all the wrong reasons.

One of those came with New Mexico State trailing by a point with 20 seconds remaining against Southern Utah. Emma Christiano of the Aggies stole an inbounds pass and I went for the easy score.

“The Aggies lead!” » the play-by-play announcer shouted after Christiano’s layup.

Well no.

Southern Utah led by three.

The good news: NM State’s Stacy Chovino scored the final two baskets of the game, including a layup in the right basket with 2 seconds left, to help the Aggies earn a 64-63 victory.

Another sigh of relief for Christiano: on this confusing day, she was not alone.

About an hour earlier, Northwestern State was trying to break the press in the first quarter of its game against Arkansas, when Karma Wynn took a bounce pass from a teammate under her own basket.

It was wide open. For good reason.

Wynn’s layup in the wrong hoop put the Lady Demons behind by six in what turned out to be an 89-59 loss.
