President Donald Trump told reporters Friday that the United States had carried out “minor strikes” against Iran, as two missiles struck the island of Qeshm near the Strait of Hormuz.
The missiles struck the island on Friday, Iran’s Tasnim news agency reported, according to Reuters. Tasnim said there was no official information on the damage, Reuters added.
The island lies off Iran’s southern coast near the Strait of Hormuz, a vital oil and gas artery that has become a war hotspot.
Speaking to reporters Friday evening after landing in West Palm Beach, Florida, Trump did not comment specifically on Qeshm Island, saying, “I don’t want to talk about it.”
But he added: “We carry out minor strikes, but they neutralize them. They built a small anti-aircraft device, and we destroyed it in about 15 minutes, maybe five.” He did not explicitly confirm that he was referring to the reported strikes on Qeshm.
The strikes are the first since Tuesday’s midterm elections, after analysts and regional officials questioned whether the vote would lead Trump toward further escalation or renewed diplomacy.
The United States struck the same island on Monday, in what a U.S. official told MS Now was a “defensive measure.”
“They really want to make a deal.”
Trump also told reporters Friday that Iran was “very keen to make a deal. They have 300 percent inflation. Their navy is gone. Their airport, everything is gone, and they want to make a deal.”
The International Monetary Fund predicts that consumer prices in Iran will increase by an average of 78.6% in 2026, in a report released on October 13.
Asked if he wanted to make a deal “very soon,” Trump replied: “Well, no one’s getting hurt, no one’s getting killed.
“You know, it’s a war that we may have been in for seven months, but we probably fought for three or four weeks, really fought. And again, you look at World War I, it’s a war. World War II, it’s a war.”
Iran has said it wants more than “paper commitments” from the United States before entering a new phase of diplomatic negotiations.
“We need to see the Americans taking practical steps,” Ali Bagheri Kani, deputy secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, told state broadcaster IRIB on Friday, according to Press TV.
