OpenAI reportedly raises another $11 billion at a valuation of $1.25 trillion

OpenAI has so far reportedly raised $11 billion in a new funding round that values the AI lab at $1.25 trillion.

Bloomberg reported on the new funding on Friday, citing sources familiar with the matter. The $11 billion is part of a larger funding round that has not yet closed, according to the media outlet. The round is expected to close in the coming weeks and could total around $20 billion, a source told Bloomberg.

In late September, Bloomberg reported that OpenAI was looking to raise $30 billion in the next round. Current figures fall well short of this goal.

TechCrunch has contacted OpenAI for comment and will update this story if it responds.

The news comes just hours after Bloomberg also reported that potential buyers of shares in the IPO of OpenAI’s main competitor, Anthropic, were looking at a significantly lower valuation than Anthropic had targeted. Bloomberg writes that some potential buyers estimate Anthropic’s valuation could be as low as $1.1 trillion, compared to the $2 trillion investors expected about a month ago.

OpenAI previously hinted it would go public this year, but later delayed its plans. The company is expected to go public next year at some point.

The AI market is in a particularly precarious situation. The Democrats’ landslide victory in the US midterm elections – and overwhelmingly negative voter sentiment towards data centers – has caused some nervousness across the market, with many anticipating possible regulatory challenges in the future.
