After losing back-to-back regular season games for the first time in his career, Ryan Day faced the media to discuss what went wrong in Ohio State’s 41-28 loss to the Ducks.
Day said the Buckeyes “have to evaluate everything” after their loss and said it was “unacceptable” for Ohio State to lose three games in a season, saying he takes responsibility for that and that he and his coaching staff must take responsibility for what went wrong.
Here’s a quick recap of what Day had to say after the match:
Ryan Day
Day said in hindsight he thought it was a mistake on the final drive of the first half with Luke Fahey pushing the ball downfield, resulting in an interception that allowed Oregon to score a touchdown before halftime.
“We couldn’t get any rhythm on offense, which I think put the defense in bad situations.”
“We have to evaluate everything. The things that we thought we had to do in this game, especially in attack, were not done… I have to evaluate everything and try to come tomorrow and understand with the staff the things that we are missing…. It all starts with the staff, and then it comes back to the players. There has to be accountability for all of that.”
Day said the Buckeyes didn’t expect the team to collapse the way it did. The way Ohio State started the game, leading 14-0 in the first quarter, was the way he thought they would play all night.
“There is something that needs to change and needs to be fixed.”
Day doesn’t think the Buckeyes’ problems are unrelated to effort.
On things snowballing when they start to go wrong: “We’re not able to make this play to stop it. »
When asked if the scheme, coaching or personnel were the problem on defense, Day said, “Probably all three.”
Day said he was “beyond disappointed” that the Buckeyes lost three games and likely won’t make the College Football Playoff. “Losing three games is unacceptable, and I realize that. From my point of view, that will never change.”
Day said he told the team in the locker room that they had to “weather the storm.”
Day said he thought the Buckeyes were putting Luke Fahey in bad situations. “I think he’s really trying.”
Ohio State left tackle Austin Siereveld and safety Jaylen McClain were the only other Buckeyes to speak after the game, and you can hear what they had to say in the video at the top of the page.
