Justice Sonia Sotomayor said Saturday that the United States is going through a “difficult time” when it comes to the rule of law and civil discourse, but that it can be overcome with a greater commitment to civility, equality and educating young people about America’s enduring values.
“I think we’re going through a difficult time right now. There are so many challenges on so many different levels. It’s a really critical time in our history,” Mayor of Soto said. “Is this going to end tomorrow? No.”
“It’s going to take hard work. I don’t know how long it will take to get us back on an even footing,” the Obama appointee said at a conference in Virginia exploring the history and future of American democracy. “I hope it will be…in my lifetime. But even if it’s not in my lifetime, I truly believe it will happen.”
During an hour-long appearance at That of George Washington Mount Vernon Estate, Mayor of Soto has not commented directly on the outcome of this week’s midterm elections. However, she cited the “influx of voters” Tuesday as a positive sign of civic engagement. Voter turnout was around 49%, a figure surpassed in modern midterm elections only in 2018.
