In France, protesters continue to demonstrate in Paris and across the country despite police bans on gatherings in the capital.
The Paris police headquarters has rejected numerous formal requests for authorization to allow protests in various areas of the city, citing October riots that led to thousands of arrests and violent clashes between demonstrators and law enforcement.
“These events demonstrated the intention of certain individuals to attack the institutions of the Republic, in particular through actions directed against public buildings and state services in order to undermine the foundations of the Republic,” police wrote, according to a digital translation of a police order by Fox News.
“These elements characterize a particular and serious risk for public institutions, the safety of agents and the normal functioning of public services during such demonstrations,” the press release continues.

Police also banned a rally by France’s popular Yellow Vest protest movement planned at Place de la Concorde, citing security concerns.
Despite the ban, prominent members of the Yellow Vests were present and were arrested at the National Assembly, in front of Place de la Concorde.
Benjamin Ball, a member of the Yellow Vest coordination group, and spokesperson Azelma Sigaux, were both arrested early Saturday afternoon, according to Agence France-Presse (AFP).

The French Interior Ministry expects 170,000 people to demonstrate across the country on Saturday, marking the fourth consecutive week of demonstrations.
The country has deployed 70,000 security forces to quell the protests, according to AFP.
“The risk is exactly the same as on previous Saturdays,” declared Interior Minister Laurent Nunez, asking the authorities “not to let down their guard,” AFP reported.

On Monday, French Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu is due to meet union leaders to discuss wages and purchasing power, AFP reported.
Despite the planned face-to-face, union leaders are calling for further strikes on Tuesday to maintain pressure on the government, saying unions are “in a position of strength (and) the government is in a position of weakness and is starting to give in.”
