WoW: Forever sets new franchise record for peak concurrent players

World of Warcraft: Forever is now the largest launch in WoW history in terms of concurrent player counts, according to Blizzard. The official Warcraft account also states that the game has brought back the largest number of returning players the franchise has ever seen. Forever went live on November 4 for Windows and macOS, and it’s included with a standard WoW subscription. Blizzard hasn’t shared any real numbers, so it’s hard to say how big the lead is. Based on this claim, Forever beat all expansion launches, including Wrath of the Lich King, as well as WoW Classic in 2019. However, Blizzard has never released peak concurrent numbers for these launches either, so a direct comparison is not possible.

The launch itself went much smoother than the beta, which had its population caps increased several times. Forever runs on large megaservers that span multiple regions instead of dozens of smaller realms, and many players have reported short or no connection queues. Blizzard’s Holly Longdale summed it up on X as “so far so good”. Developer Josh Greenfield has admitted to some issues, mainly with the boat and zeppelin service, and Blizzard has added temporary portals while it prepares a proper fix. On Twitch, the WoW category reportedly peaked at around 1.12 million viewers at launch, according to Streams Charts. Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella previously called the Forever beta the largest in the franchise’s history, and it looks like the launch has kept that momentum going.
