Ocarina of Time remake datamine suggests Master Quest is on the way

Ocarina of Time’s notoriously tricky Master Quest mode could make a return in the new remake.

Dataminer MrCheeze shared a list of strings from the remake’s files on Bluesky, several of which link the “MQ” tag to dungeons like Dodongo’s Cave.

In a follow-up, spotted by TheGamer, they highlighted other entries, including “HasMQ”, “IsMQModeExist”, “NewGameMQ” and “ReleaseMQ”.

Dataminer OatmealDome added on Twitter/X that the mode will be unlocked by owning the DLC, rather than arriving in an update, although “the data is incomplete.” “I can confirm that the world is mirrored and the dungeons are modified (e.g. the cows in Jabu-Jabu’s belly),” they said.

If you haven’t played it, Master Quest is a remixed version of Ocarina of Time with revamped dungeons and more difficult puzzles. It first appeared as a bonus disc on the GameCube, then returned in 2011’s Ocarina of Time 3D, which unlocked it after completing the main game. This version also mirrored the entire world, which is what OatmealDome found, and enemies dealt double damage.

As with any datamine, there is no guarantee that it will ever see the light of day. Nintendo has not announced any DLC for the remake, and it is unclear whether Master Quest would be free, as it was on 3DS, or paid.

The Ocarina of Time remake launched on Switch 2 on November 5. Donlan called the new version an “amazing remake” in his five-star Eurogamer review Ocarina of Time.
