A U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent shot and killed a man Thursday afternoon in New York, according to the city’s mayor, Zohran Mamdani.
Initial reports indicated that officers surrounded the man and a five-year-old child in his car in a residential neighborhood before shooting several times, the mayor said in a statement Thursday evening. The child was physically unharmed, according to Mamdani.
The person who was shot was conscious and taken to a hospital, the New York Police Department said in a brief statement.
The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) did not immediately respond to an inquiry Thursday evening.
The shooting took place around 4 p.m. in the Marble Hill neighborhood of the Bronx. New York police said they were not at the scene at the time of the shooting.
“This is an unconscionable and incredibly serious situation,” Mamdani wrote in an X post. “I have called the president; when we speak, I will demand that he end all ICE enforcement actions in our city.”
Cellphone video published by The New York Times appears to show the immediate aftermath of the shooting, with an officer in a yellow vest holding what appears to be an assault rifle while speaking on the phone. The newspaper said other witness videos appeared to show several officers in the middle of the street, one armed and the other holding a man to the ground.
The City Reporter, a local news outlet, said the video showed chaos after the shooting, with a crowd gathered and NYPD officers appearing to carry a man into the back of a vehicle. Videos also showed bullet holes in the windshield of an SUV, NY1 reported.
Kathy Hochul, the Democratic governor of New York, said in a brief statement that she had been informed of the shooting, writing: “We expect federal authorities to provide a full and transparent account of the circumstances surrounding this incident. New Yorkers deserve to know exactly what happened and why.”
Mamdani expressed outrage in his message, saying, “I will not stand idly by while ICE agents terrorize our communities. Our thoughts are with the injured New Yorker and his family tonight. We pray for his recovery. Get ICE out of our neighborhoods. Get ICE out of our hospitals. Get ICE off our streets. Keep ICE off our children.”
The mayor ended his statement with: “Abolish ICE.”
Protesters began gathering in the neighborhood shortly after the shooting, some holding signs saying, “Jail all killer ICE agents” and “Leave our neighbors alone.” The NYPD also erected barricades at a nearby hospital where the shot man was reportedly treated.
DHS has faced growing backlash over the use of deadly force by immigration agents in the field over the past year. Last month, an immigration agent fatally shot Wilber Rafael Garcés Pérez, 28, while he was in his car during a traffic stop in Texas. Federal prosecutors later charged the man with assault, alleging he hit a police officer with his rearview mirror as he tried to flee.
The Trump administration has repeatedly accused immigrants and protesters of “weaponizing” their vehicles, alleging that agents fired their weapons in response to “vehicle attacks,” but a July Guardian analysis found that most of those claims touted by federal officials have collapsed under scrutiny.
Since Trump returned to power last year, U.S. immigration agents have shot at least two dozen people, according to one analysis, including three U.S. citizens who were killed.
