Every year, Indonesia faces forest fires mainly caused by illegal slash-and-burn practices, used by farmers and companies as a low-cost method of clearing vegetation.
But recent dry weather brought on by a “super El Niño” has exacerbated the problem, particularly in parts of Sumatra and Kalimantan in Indonesia, leading to widespread haze that winds have carried across the region.
The wildfires are among the worst Indonesia has seen in more than a decade, blanketing parts of the country in thick smog.
Local authorities have warned that wildfires could continue into early November due to the delayed rainy season.
