Avatar: Seven Havens releases this week, introducing us to the first new Avatar in over a decade. Original creators Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko returned for the 2D series, which follows a new avatar, Pavi, more than 200 years after The Legend of Korra. It’s approximately 300 years after the events of The Last Airbender.
Seven Havens will stream exclusively on Paramount+, now under the Skydance banner. The full series is planned for 26 half-hour episodes, just like the old days. However, these episodes will be divided into two “Books”, the Avatar version of the seasons.
Avatar: Seven Havens Book 1 premieres this week
The first three episodes of volume 1 will be broadcast on October 9. Subsequent episodes will be released in batches every Friday, so all 13 episodes of Seven Havens will be streaming by the end of October.
Here’s what it all looks like in list form:
As mentioned, the series will stream exclusively on Paramount+. Previous Avatar shows were eventually released on DVD and Blu-ray, but that seems less likely for Seven Havens in today’s Paramount era.
The episode titles were initially reported by Polygon, along with the promotional artwork for each batch:
As for what to expect from the series, Seven Havens follows the usual Avatar tradition by taking on, well, a new Avatar. The star of the new animated series is a young earthbender named Pavi.
Korra picked up less than a century after The Last Airbender, entering an era of industrialization in an otherwise recognizable version of the Four Nations. Seven Havens, on the other hand, jumps over 200 years into the future.
Early trailers show an entirely separate post-apocalyptic world that generally disregards the notion of Avatar. Given how much time has passed, it’s possible that something happened to the Avatar cycle that delayed its continuation after Korra’s death. Otherwise, Korra might have achieved a Kyoshi-level lifespan.
Either way, it looks like some really crazy stuff happened after Korra and Asami headed off into the sunset.
Paramount, which completed its acquisition of Warner Bros., has been rebuilding the Avatar franchise over the past two years. Most recently, Paramount released Avatar Aang: The Last Airbender, a new animated film featuring the original Gaang all grown up. This was notoriously leaked online in protest of Paramount’s refusal to give it a theatrical release, but we were fans of the film nonetheless.
Otherwise, while Seven Havens has already been greenlit for 26 episodes, it’s unclear when we’ll actually see Volume 2. We’ll likely learn more about the future of the series as well as other projects like the fighting game Avatar in New York this weekend.
