Hegseth faces bipartisan backlash over public execution of Fort Hood shooter

Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth’s The surprise plan to livestream the military’s first execution in six decades has sparked fierce reactions from both sides of the aisle.

Senior lawmakers from both parties said the plan to broadcast the planned execution by firing squad on December 3 from the former army major. Nidal Malik Hasan amounted to a dishonorable public spectacle likely to inspire terrorism.

Hassan was court-martialed for the murder of 13 people in a 2009 shooting spree at Fort Hood, Texas, and sentenced to death.

“Hassan should face the death penalty, but make his execution public and broadcast it continuously? Beyond disgusting,” the senator said. Thomas Tillis (RN.C.), a frequent critic of Hegseth, said the. “Public executions are what oppressive dictatorships like Iran and Afghanistan do. This should not happen in America.”
