The Philadelphia Eagles released backup quarterback Andy Dalton on Friday, according to Mike Garafolo of NFL Network.
Tanner McKee and Cole Payton now sit behind Jalen Hurts on Philadelphia’s depth chart.
The Eagles’ roster has undergone several changes of late, with center Cam Jurgens being traded to the Baltimore Ravens on Wednesday after right tackle Lane Johnson retired on Tuesday.
As for Dalton, a possible return to Philadelphia is a possibility.
The Eagles could still bring him back to their 53-man roster or practice squad, according to Garafolo.
Dalton was in the middle of his first season in Philadelphia after spending the last three years as a depth option for the Carolina Panthers.
The 38-year-old appeared in three preseason games for the Eagles, going 18 of 35 for 168 yards and a touchdown without getting picked off.
Dalton briefly appeared during Philadelphia’s 27–7 loss to the Chicago Bears in Week 3 while Hurts was being evaluated for a concussion, throwing an interception when the Eagles had the ball at the Chicago two-yard line.
Hurts returned to the game during the team’s next practice.
The Eagles finally promoted McKee to their second quarterback spot against Dalton on Sunday.
Despite the veteran’s costly turnover, Philadelphia could value his experience and look to re-sign him as it attempts to clinch a sixth straight playoff berth.
Dalton has started 169 games over his 16 NFL seasons from 2011 to 2026, while McKee has just two starts under his belt. Payton, a fifth-round rookie, has yet to appear in a regular-season game.
