Beach Boys frontman Mike Love returned to the stage despite “serious health issues” that prompted doctors to ask him to “focus on his health,” according to longtime guest artist John Stamos.
Stamos shared a statement on October 11, which also appeared on Love’s Instagram account as a collaborative post, defending the Beach Boys co-founder following a performance that sparked health concerns among fans.
Images of Love, 85, being carefully brought on stage by Stamos for the band’s performance at Cincinnati’s PNC Pavilion on Oct. 10 quickly made the rounds on social media. A Rolling Stone magazine headline described the singer as “alarmingly fragile.”
Love, seated center stage with a microphone in front of his face, provided backing vocals while Stamos, guitarist Brian Eichenberger and other band members took the lead singing the set list. According to videos from the event, Love sometimes made hand gestures to the crowd, sending waves and a heart symbol.
Mike Love “facing serious health problems”: John Stamos
As Stamos prepared to join the band for a concert the next day at Nashville’s Ryman Auditorium, he took to social media to explain why Love’s continued stage presence is so meaningful, calling it a “miracle.”
“My beloved friend, father figure, musical hero and mentor, Mike Love, is facing serious health issues. We hope he does what he loves for years to come, but we don’t know what the future holds. We will do it tonight,” he captioned an image of the two of them.
He continued, “Mike is a fighter. Although doctors, family and friends ask him to focus on his health, he insists on being on stage. He says he needs his band, the audience, his friends and the drummer around him to lift him up.”
Stamos added that after playing together for more than four decades, it had touched him “deeply” to “see someone larger than life take on something so human and fragile.” He acknowledged that “the Mike Love we see tonight may not be exactly the Mike we’ve always known. But he’s still the Mike we love.”
Love, who officiated Stamos and Caitlin McHugh’s wedding, “didn’t just give me a place in his band. He gave me a place in his life,” Stamos wrote. As a frequent guest artist, Stamos “felt charged with being a steward of this extraordinary music, passing it on to new generations.”

Stamos vowed to be “completely present” during their concert in Nashville, where he hoped to “watch age, illness and time fade away.” He also admitted, “Perhaps the hardest thing about loving someone is getting so used to the miracle of having them there that you completely forget that it’s a miracle.”
“I want to cherish every second without feeling those seconds ticking away. That’s what I give her,” he wrote. “We don’t know what tomorrow brings. But we know tonight.”
The Beach Boys cancel several tour dates due to Mike Love’s health concerns
The Cincinnati and Nashville shows came after the band took a three-month hiatus, which Love described in a July 22 social media post as “a short break to recharge.” Around thirty tour dates were impacted.
When it came time for the Beach Boys to return for a trio of performances September 24-27, those events were canceled “due to circumstances beyond (their) control,” according to the venues.
A previously scheduled show at the Grossinger Motors Arena in Bloomington, Illinois on October 9 was also canceled, along with a planned concert in Calgary, Canada on October 19. The group gave no explanation for these cancellations.
In a June 15 Instagram post, Love described experiencing emotional and physical setbacks, including “ongoing recovery from what started as bronchitis, followed by COVID.”
Following the death of co-founder Brian Wilson on June 11, 2025, and the departure of Bruce Johnston in March after six decades with the group, Love is the only original member still touring with the California group as it celebrates the 60th anniversary of “Pet Sounds.”
What remains on the Beach Boys’ 2026 tour schedule is a concert on November 11 at the Walt Disney Resort in Florida and an event on November 13 at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Bristol, Virginia.
