Q: Does a diagnosis of DCIS mean I have breast cancer? What should I prepare for in terms of treatment and prognosis?
A few years ago, my 80-year-old mother insisted on having “one last mammogram.” Technically, she was over the age range in which they are recommended — 40 to 74 — but she had just moved to Miami and started seeing a new doctor. So she wanted to be healthy as she began her new life. However, the mammogram detected a suspicious area and a biopsy revealed ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS).
