Can we stop now with the panting drums for JJ McCarthy replace James Winston as quarterback of the New York Giants as soon as possible?
The Giants would undoubtedly lose Sunday’s game against the Washington Commanders without Winston’s heroics – 254 passing yards and three touchdowns, including two in the final eight minutes of regulation to erase a 14-point deficit, and the first 50-plus passing game of his 12-year career without an interception. However, the last fact comes with the help of a questionable call.
Winston, as he reminded reporters recently, is the Giants’ starting quarterback. With Jaxson Dart gone for the season, he deserves to be.
The Giants, trailing 12-3 and with only 77 total offensive yards in the first half, changed the game after halftime. They opted for more no-huddle and put the play on Winston’s right arm. He made 26 of 38 after intermission and helped the Giants win the game twice in overtime. The Giants scored three touchdowns and a field goal on their four possessions in the third and fourth quarters.
If the Giants had lost in Sunday’s extra session, that wouldn’t have been the case for Winston. In the final 40 minutes of play, he did everything a quarterback could do to give his team a chance to win. In overtime, Dominic Zvada’s missed 46-yard field goal and Cam Skattebo’s untimely fumble deprived the Giants of a chance to make it 4-1.
“I thought he (Winston) was unbelievable in the fourth quarter. I thought he was unbelievable in the second half,” head coach John Harbaugh said. “I was thinking about his ability to come out and change like that. And I felt like we changed our offense, we tried different things, and he really adapted to the things we were doing offensively. And he was amazing.
“In the first half he wasn’t. He’d be the first to tell you that, but it’s everyone’s responsibility. I tell the guys, nothing.
good is one person. We are all responsible for all good, and we are all responsible for everything
bad or not good. And so, in that way, he’s in the middle of the mix with everyone else. I called him, I broke
the band, I said, what they showed there was truly remarkable.
Winston was neutral about the performance.
“I think when your back is against the wall, you have to depend on your playmakers, and I think we
did a good job of doing that, getting the football to the guys, mixing them up, and kind of
threw them off the schedule,” Winston said.
“We never give up and our goal is to do whatever it takes to win a football game. And I am
I’m just grateful the guys took on the challenge, and we recorded what we’re capable of doing if the
the game must go the other way. However, you know, we still need to focus on the things that we can
control, and the things we can control is that we do our best every play.”
Winston is now 2-0-1 in three games replacing Dart. Even after Sunday, he was again asked about the skepticism in some quarters that he should be the starting quarterback.
“I always focus on what my heart desires, and I say it over and over again, my desire is to be the
Super Bowl-winning quarterback for the New York Football Giants. My desire is to be off to a good start
NFL quarterback. I dreamed of it, and it’s who I am, and I know I’ll keep going
to improve myself and find ways to help this team win football games.
The Giants are an imperfect team. Their flaws are evident every time they play. You can easily argue that it’s a few twists and turns to be 1-4 instead of 3-1-1 and first place in the NFC East up for grabs.
In some ways, Winston is the perfect quarterback for the Giants in this place and time. It is obviously imperfect. There’s always an element of “which team is he going to throw it to?” » when Winston steps back to pass. Sometimes his eyes look like saucers ready to pop out of his head. He looks embarrassed as he starts moving in the pocket. Especially with two hands wrapped around the ball, with the obvious intention of trying to protect it. His mask somehow makes him look like he should be playing in the 1960s.
Yet Winston, like these Giants, keeps playing and keeps throwing the rock, mistakes or no mistakes.
“It’s faith. When you have unwavering faith, you’re not phased by circumstances and conditions and facts. That’s something I continue to share with the guys, I say ‘let’s not phase,'” Winston said. “Russell Wilson always used to say this thing, and a good friend of his wrote a book called “Staying Neutral.” I think Russ did an incredible job: no matter the ups or downs, he remained neutral. I was glad I was able to understand that from him. Also including, biblically, one of my favorite verses, Philippians 4:13 says “I can do all things through Christ, through him who strengthens me.” Before that, Paul (a apostle) is in prison. He talks about being happy with much and being happy with little. In the end, he learned the secret to being content, which is: take what you have, do what you can with what you have, where you have it, and make the most of it.
Winston and the Giants have done it thus far, regardless of the circumstances. Maybe the time will come when Winston moves out of the starting quarterback position. However, as of now, he is the starting quarterback.
And there’s no reason for that to change.
Some other “quick things, I think”
- The chatter that the Giants pass rush stinks needs to stop.
- These two numbers, in which I slipped ‘Congratulations and Wet Willies‘, are crazy. I have to relate them to the belief that Harbaugh instilled in this team that if they keep this up, they’ll have a chance. — According to the FOX broadcast, the Giants had lost 24 consecutive games while trailing at halftime. Well, at least now they haven’t lost 25 times in a row.— According to ESPN Insightscomes this incredible nugget. Entering today, the Giants were 0-230 since 1970 while trailing by more than 14 points in the final 8 minutes of regulation. They are now 0-230-1.
“The one thing that has become very evident is what’s inside our players. Their heart, their courage, their mental strength, their ability to overcome adversity is a plus, a plus, a plus. And that showed today, so I’m very proud of that. however, for their fight I would have liked the result to be a victory, and we will talk about it now, I am sure of it.
- Until overtime on Sunday, the run blocking was horrible. I can’t help but think that sometimes teams need running backs who can make players miss and are good at correcting their blockers. I’m not sure the Giants have that. That’s why they were interested in Kenneth Walker and Jeremiah Love this offseason.
- If I’m Commanders owner Josh Harris, I would seriously consider firing Dan Quinn this morning. You simply cannot botch timer management at the end of the game, giving your quarterback conflicting – and wrong – adviceas a veteran head coach and that your job is not in jeopardy.
