Hurricane Isaias leaves trail of destruction in Southeast: ‘I didn’t expect to be 77 and experience this’

Hurricane Isaiah left behind a trail of destruction from the Florida Gulf Coast to the Carolinas over the weekend after hitting shore near Destin, Florida, as a Category 2 storm.

The storm hit the ground Friday night and roared across the Southeast. At least two people were killed in Florida and two in Alabama.

Some of the hurricane’s strongest wind gusts were recorded 15 miles offshore in Milton, Florida. The wind brought down a massive tree which fell on top of a house. Phyllis Hennebery said she was lying in her bedroom when the tree fell.

“I didn’t expect to be 77 years old and experience this,” she said, showing CBS News the destruction of the fallen tree on the ceiling above her.

The hurricane destroyed the roofs of the apartments and tore away the walls that once surrounded the rooms. As of Monday morning, more than 150,000 customers in Florida were still without power, according to poweroutage.us. More than 20,000 other people were without power in Alabama.

Pastor Jonathan Kaushal’s church group was distributing food and water after the storm.

“A lot of people are in need after the hurricane and so we just want to be there for the community,” he said.

In western North Carolina, more than half a foot of rain flooded roads.

Tropical Storm Rachel hits the West Coast

As Isaias moved across the Southeast, the West Coast felt the impact of another significant storm. What remains of Tropical Storm Rachel sent massive 8-foot waves onto beachfront homes south of Los Angeles.

The Coast Guard rescued a man trapped in a sailboat docking Sunday morning by helicopter.

Flooding also spread to southern Nevada, inundating the Las Vegas Strip.

Severe weather also hit Utah during the Moab 240, a five-day ultramarathon. Around 70 riders were rescued by bus after being stranded by dangerous flooding.
