Jim Harbaugh: I can’t think of a time I’ve been more angry with myself

Chargers head coach Jim Harbaugh is prone to hyperbole.

Whether or not he gave any of it away after Sunday’s loss to the Broncos remains up for interpretation. But Harbaugh went to the extreme in discussing his decision to go for fourth-and-1 from the Los Angeles 41 while leading 17-10 with 10:33 left in the fourth quarter.

Justin Herbert got stuffed on his run for a turnover on downs. Denver scored a touchdown to tie the game, then two field goals on its next two possessions to win the game.

“I can’t think of a time when I’ve been angrier with myself” Harbaugh said after the game, via ESPN’s Anthony Gharib. “This team works so hard, played so valiantly. And yes, I take 100% responsibility for that decision and I reversed the momentum of the game. So it wasn’t the right one, and I must be right on those.

Harbaugh added that the Chargers displayed positive traits, but the loss falls on him for this pick.

“Right now the only thing I can think about is that I screwed up, that’s really the only thing on my mind,” Harbaugh said. “Because the play, the saves, the momentum was in our favor. And yes, bad decision. Both. When they don’t work, it’s my responsibility.”

The Chargers travel to Kansas City next week, looking to avoid an 0-6 start heading into their Week 7 bye.

Harbaugh seeks answers.

“Yeah, I don’t know what that message is,” Harbaugh said. “The players are fighting hard, playing, giving everything they have. It’s the only way, it’s the best.”
