Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella has been more quiet than his counterparts in recent weeks as executives from Anthropic, Google, OpenAI and others discuss the risks of artificial intelligence. Now he’s calling for change across the industry.
On “We need to assume that a model is compromised and contain it from the start,” Nadella said. “An authorized person should always be able to pause or stop a model mid-task. We cannot treat Super Intelligence as a set of nested black boxes and simply accept or reject its recommendations, responses and actions.”
Nadella used the term “Super Intelligence” throughout his message. Last month, President Trump ordered the executive branch to use it in place of artificial intelligence.
The Microsoft CEO supported controls and auditing tools for AI, managed by the model’s creators. “No single model should control both the behavior of a system and the evidence required to determine whether that behavior is consistent with the original intent.”
The AI industry needs a system that ensures rapid disclosure when models “fail or are compromised,” he said. This would allow companies to communicate issues more effectively, ensuring that any failures result in lessons that could be applied across the industry.
In recent months, we’ve heard of several AIs gone malicious, including an OpenAI agent that accessed an Australian government website. Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei made the call to “slow the pace” of AI development last month, followed by OpenAI’s Sam Altman and xAI’s Elon Musk. It is difficult to know how seriously to take these calls for self-regulation; Is a big tech company really going to leave money on the table?
One person is definitely not a fan of this approach: President Trump.
