Penta walking out of Money in the Bank with the briefcase surprised a lot of fans, and it turns out it may have surprised some people within WWE as well. According to a new behind-the-scenes update, he wasn’t even expected to be in this position just a month before the show.
During a recent Q&A, WrestleVotes’ JoeyVotes and TC were asked about Penta’s Money in the Bank victory. Joey explained that everything changed after Penta’s performance against Roman Reigns on the Mexico edition of RAW, and that his stock reportedly skyrocketed behind the scenes.
“A lot of plans changed after Mexico. He was the creative favorite. Those inside thought Penta was going to win that match. Three weeks later he ended up winning it. So he did himself a lot of good in Mexico. I don’t know if that will translate into a title win, but he wasn’t supposed to be in this place a month ago.”
TC quickly confirmed this, making it clear that Penta’s efforts came to fruition much faster than many people thought: “He definitely wasn’t.”
So, Penta’s performance against Roman Reigns in Mexico seems to have completely changed the way he was perceived internally. While this doesn’t necessarily mean that WWE is already planning to make him a world champion, it appears that one stellar performance was enough to propel him into one of the biggest spots in the company.
It’s another reminder of how quickly things can change in WWE. One month Penta wouldn’t even have been named the winner of Money in the Bank, and the next month he was standing at the top of the ladder, holding the briefcase with a guaranteed world title opportunity in his pocket.
Do you think WWE made the right choice in turning to Penta, or should someone else have won this year’s Money in the Bank? Let us know in the comments.
