When he returned to welcome Saturday evening live For the third time this weekend, comedian Shane Gillis attracted a lot of attention for his monologue – and the response was strong. One of the most vocal critics was Schitt Creek star Dan Levy, who posted a video on Instagram on Sunday explaining why he took issue with the monologue, and one part in particular.
The joke in question was when Gillis said, “I haven’t been to the gym in so long, I didn’t know women dress like whores now? I’m sorry, there’s no other way to describe it. Have you seen it? I’ve seen it. The shorts. Have you seen the shorts?”
In her response video, captioned “Ffs,” Levy said in part: “Women who wear short shorts to the gym don’t make them whores; This makes men who call them whores misogynists. »
Her comments section was flooded with support, including from a handful of music stars. Jewel thanked Levy, while Wicked Star Kristin Chenoweth posted a “100” emoji and Lisa Loeb commented alongside a “Thank you” fire emoji.
Maggie Baird, the activist mother of Billie Eilish and FINNEAS, shared Levy’s video on her Instagram Story with her own lengthy caption. “Thank you (Dan Levy)!” she started. “I literally gasped when (Shane Gillis) said that on (SNL). I felt it physically (and it reminded me of Bill Burr’s horrible monologue),” she added, referencing Burr’s controversial 2020 appearance on the sketch show, when he complained that white women had hijacked the ‘woke’ movement and that Pride Month shouldn’t be this long. Baird continued: “I come from the sketch world and I’m not disgusted by comedy, but how can men and comedy writers still think it’s funny! It’s actually dangerous for women to promote this bullshit….
Flavor Flav also played Levy’s video, sharing a post about her response on X with the message: “Important alliance. »
Maren Morris also added to the discourse in her own Instagram post, with the message “me being a whore at the gym” over a video of herself soundtracked by her song “be a slut.” In the video, she raises a middle finger to the camera and ends with the caption: “leave my gym shorts out.”
Gillis hosted Saturday’s show with Rosalía as musical guest. In addition to being its third host, Gillis was also briefly a cast member on the show, but he was fired shortly after his casting was announced when his previous homophobic and racist jokes resurfaced.
