The truth is still there.
A restart of The X Files directed by Ryan Coogler has landed a series order at Hulu. THE Sinners The filmmaker has been developing the project for several years and he wrote and directed the pilot episode. Coogler will executive produce the series, along with Jennifer Yale (Underground, see) serving as showrunner. Onyx Collective and 20th Television produce with Coogler’s Proximity Media.
Danielle Deadwyler (Rooster, the harder he falls) and Himesh Patel (The Odyssey) will star in the series as “two highly decorated but very different FBI agents who form an unlikely bond when they are assigned to a long-closed division devoted to cases involving unexplained phenomena,” according to the series’ logline.
“I liked The X Files for a long time, so having the chance to write and direct the pilot meant a lot to me,” Coogler said. “What Chris Carter created is special, and we wanted to honor everything that allowed the original series to connect with so many people while finding our own way in this world. Danielle and Himesh, along with the rest of our cast, brought very original perspectives and performances to these characters, and seeing them come together was one of the most rewarding parts of the experience. I couldn’t have asked for better collaborators than my team, my colleagues at Proximity Media and our partners at Onyx Collective and 20th Television. I am grateful for the trust and support they have given us as we embark on this new chapter.
Created by Carter, The X Files originally aired from 1993 to 2002 on Fox and spawned two feature films. Gillian Anderson and David Duchovny starred for most of the original series and in both films; Robert Patrick and Annabeth Gish starred in the later stages of the series. Fox revived the series for two additional seasons in 2016 and 2018, with Anderson and Duchovny returning to their roles as Agents Dana Scully and Fox Mulder.
Carter serves as executive producer of the Hulu series alongside Zinzi Coogler and Sev Ohanian of Coogler, Yale and Proximity Media. Deadwyler, Patel and Proximity’s Simone Harris serve as co-EPs.
“We look forward to continuing this journey as executive producers and are particularly excited to work closely with Jennifer Yale, Simone Harris and the entire cast and crew as we embark on this new chapter of The X Files to life,” Zinzi Coogler, Ohanian and Ryan Coogler said in a statement. “It was also incredibly special to see our fellow Proximity co-founder Ludwig Göransson contribute music to the pilot, making it a true collaboration within the Proximity family.”
