Joni Mitchell sworn in as a US citizen

When The New York Times compiled a list of the greatest living American songwriters earlier this year, the ranking was met with widespread criticism from readers for not including Joni Mitchell. The newspaper’s explanation at the time was that Mitchell was — and remained — a Canadian citizen, even though he resided primarily in California, hence the exclusion.

Now, the Times may have to update and change the list, as the legendary singer-songwriter is now a U.S. citizen.

On Tuesday morning, on her Instagram, Mitchell posted a photo of herself, smiling while holding an American flag, standing in front of both the flags of the United States and the Department of Homeland Security. Along with this, she posted a short video of herself being applauded as she was called to take the oath of office as a citizen.

Its simple caption: “A journey that began 62 years ago. »

No further information was immediately provided by Mitchell or his representatives on the surprise move to dual citizenship after more than six decades.

Some may wonder why Mitchell has chosen now, more than ever, to formally align himself with the United States, given how many musicians of his generation and his ilk have made statements suggesting that the Trump era has not been America’s proudest moment. But it’s possible that the current climate had something, or everything, to do with his decision.

Two years ago, while appearing before a “Joni Jam” at the Hollywood Bowl, Mitchell blurted, “Fuck Donald Trump,” then added, “I wish I could vote…I’m Canadian.” I’m one of those bad immigrants.”
