Tuesday, a jury delivered a mixed verdict in the civil lawsuit filed against free agent wide receiver Tyreek Hill by his estranged wife, Keeta Vaccaro. The verdict comes at a time when the NFL is investigating Hill for Vaccaro’s allegations.
“We have been monitoring developments in this matter which remains under review under the Personal Conduct Policy,” an NFL spokesperson told PFT Tuesday evening after the verdict was released.
The civil verdict does not bind the league, neither as to the counts on which it lost, nor as to the counts on which it won. The NFL’s investigation is independent of this process.
The key question is whether Vaccaro will cooperate with the NFL. He does not have the power to issue subpoenas; if, for example, the verdict results in a quick settlement, a confidentiality clause could prevent him from speaking to NFL investigators.
Regardless, the verdict becomes evidence the NFL could use, along with the transcript of Vaccaro’s sworn testimony. It’s unclear when the NFL’s investigation will conclude, or whether the civil verdict would prompt the league to place Hill on paid leave while the investigation progresses.
