A South Dakota lawmaker with ties to Minnesota died Monday after spending days in the hospital following an officer-involved shooting last week.
According to the Minnehaha County Sheriff’s Office, Deputy Katherine Frank, 26, died surrounded by family and loved ones. The agency said she worked at the sheriff’s office for more than two years and worked in corrections before becoming a deputy.
“She served the citizens of Minnehaha County with professionalism, humility and dedication,” the sheriff’s office wrote. “His absence will be deeply felt by all who had the privilege of working alongside him. »
Authorities said officers responded to a home on Keyrell Drive in Sioux Falls on Oct. 9. About 30 minutes after they arrived, gunfire erupted, striking Frank and another deputy.
Authorities later identified the suspect as Brandon Oetken, 39, who is facing criminal charges.
During this time, Frank also had ties to Minnesota. His father, Steven Frank, is a pastor at St. Paul’s Loon Lake Lutheran Church located in Vergas.
“We ask for prayers for all of their family, friends, our church community and our Vergas community,” the church shared in a social media post.
The sheriff’s office said a memorial has been set up outside the Sioux Falls Police Department and Minnehaha County Sheriff’s Office for anyone who would like to pay their respects.
