The female elephant carried the calf for hours, occasionally dropping it off to feed or drink, before picking it up again and continuing its journey along the Huab River, Veronesi said. “I said to myself, ‘It’s such a sad scene but it needs to be seen by people.’ This photo clearly shows how much pain these elephants are suffering, how complex feelings they experience, which people may not associate with animals.”
