Rockstar says the next game it runs on after Grand Theft Auto 6 won’t be another eight years away.
When GTA 6 releases on November 19, it will be the studio’s first major new release since Red Dead Redemption 2 (244 articles)” href=”https://www.videogameschronicle.com/games/red-dead-redemption-2/”>Red Dead Redemption 2, arriving on PlayStation 4 (8,784 articles)” href=”https://www.videogameschronicle.com/platforms/playstation/ps4/”>PS4 and Xbox One (7,177 articles)” href=”https://www.videogameschronicle.com/platforms/xbox/xb1/”>Xbox One in October 2018.
Gamers may worry that with games becoming more expensive and taking longer to create, and with Rockstar Games (573 articles)” href=”https://www.videogameschronicle.com/companies/take-two-interactive/rockstar-games/”>Rockstar’s trademark attention to detail, it may be well into the 2030s before its next title arrives, whether it’s a new Red Dead Redemption game or something else.
In a new interview with Bloomberg, however, studio execs Phil Hooker and Aaron Garbut say the wait for Rockstar’s next game won’t be as long as that for GTA 6.
According to the two men, the technology created for this game, as well as the team trained to work on it, will be carried over to the next project, which should reduce development time.
“The engine, tools and team we have built over the course of this project will allow us to do things faster,” Hooker said. “I’m confident we can build on this foundation and move more sideways rather than upwards to create more compelling content.”
Garbut added: “We fundamentally changed a lot of things on this project. But now it’s done, and we’re not going to destroy it.”
The publication compares this to the release of Grand Theft Auto Vice City, which was released just a year after Grand Theft Auto 3, as all the groundwork had been laid during the development of that game. However, there is nothing to suggest that Rockstar’s next game will arrive anytime soon.

Elsewhere in the interview, Garbut said that GTA 6 will be the culmination of everything Rockstar has learned so far, including the staff who have been working at the studio for decades.
“The last 30 years have been a training to get to this point,” he explained. “The team and we as individuals have been doing this for so long that there’s sort of a shared understanding, a shared knowledge and a sort of shortcut to the questions.”
Earlier this week, it was reported that Rockstar plans to release the PC version of Grand Theft Auto 6 before the end of March 2027.
GamesBeat cited four separate industry sources, all of whom are believed to be aware of Rockstar’s plans, but all of whom asked to remain anonymous to avoid damaging their relationship with the studio. Rockstar has yet to officially confirm a PC version (13,094 items)” href=”https://www.videogameschronicle.com/platforms/pc/”>PC version.
