Seahawks adapt playbook so Sam Darnold can make ‘quick decisions’ and avoid turnovers

Many factors go into winning or losing football games, but a quick look at the Seahawks’ performance through the first five weeks of the season leads to an obvious conclusion about their results.

In their three wins, the Seahawks turned the ball over twice, but they turned it over seven times in their two losses. Four of those turnovers in losses were interceptions thrown by quarterback Sam Darnold — he has five total — and reducing those giveaways is at the top of Seattle’s to-do list ahead of Thursday’s game against the Broncos.

On Tuesday, offensive coordinator Brian Fleury said he and Darnold are working to adapt their game plan so that it emphasizes plays that make Darnold feel comfortable and decisive on the field.

“It relies more on plays that we have a lot of experience with, both in training camp and the first couple of weeks, for him to be comfortable making quick decisions. and progress through” Fleury said, via the team’s website. “We’re going to lean more in that direction.”

The Seahawks had chances to win the two games they lost despite the turnovers and those chances would be much better if they didn’t give the ball away, so focusing on eliminating them is a prudent response with the race for playoff positioning in the NFC already well underway.
