Older Google Home and Nest speakers receive major firmware update

Google is testing a major firmware update for Google Home, Home Mini, Nest Mini, and Nest Audio.

Google has long operated a preview program for speaker firmware. Version 3.79.550760 was released today with five major features:

  • Audio and media streaming and volume improvements
  • Configuration and connectivity improvements on WiFi issues
  • Improvements to the Google Assistant input experience
  • Improvements to the smart home control experience
  • Overall performance and stability improvements

Update 3.79 improves the Wi-Fi setup and experience, as well as audio performance and smart home control. “Google Assistant” presumably refers to Gemini.

This version is currently being tested for Google Home (2016), Home Mini (2017), Nest Mini (2019), and Nest Audio (2020). The Google Home Max has been using older firmware for a while now, while the Home Speaker wasn’t included in this wave. Since it was recently launched, it may already have these improvements.

You can sign up for the Preview program from the Google Home app. Go to the device page > Settings in the upper right corner > Device information > Preview schedule. Updates are done automatically at night.

It should take a few weeks before update 3.79 is released to the production channel for all users.
