Game Overview

It’s a night of sibling rivalry at Capital One Arena, and at least one member of the Hutson family is going home unhappy.

Washington Capitals rookie defenseman Cole Hutson will face his older brother, Montreal Canadiens star Lane Hutson, for the first time in an NHL game on Wednesday night. Lane, the 2025 Calder Trophy winner, has six points in six games this season, while Cole has three points in his first full NHL campaign. Their parents, Rob and Julie, will be watching from the stands, with bragging rights absolutely on the line.

“He who doesn't win won't be happy”: Hutson brothers prepare for their first NHL game

The Capitals (3-3-0) return home looking to end a two-game losing streak after falling 4-2 to the Carolina Hurricanes on Tuesday night. Washington held the lead twice before Andrei Svechnikov’s late power play goal broke a 2-2 tie. Montreal (3-2-1), meanwhile, has won two straight games, most recently beating the Buffalo Sabers 4-3 in a shootout. The two teams will play their second match in as many evenings.

Washington will once again be without Pierre-Luc Dubois (illness), Matt Roy (lower body) and Rasmus Sandin (knee). Justin Holl is expected to remain in the lineup after scoring in his Capitals debut on Tuesday. Charlie Lindgren will start in goal for Washington, opposite Jakub Dobes for Montreal.

Puck drop will take place at 7:30 p.m. on Monumental Sports Network, with Joe Beninati and Craig Laughlin on the call. It’s Hispanic Heritage Night at Capital One Arena.

Hutson I bowl

1st period

Bob McDonald sings both anthems…perfectly, I might add.

Tuch-Strome-Kyrou and Chychrun-Liljegren get the start for the Capitals over Kreider-Newhook-Anderson and Guhle-Carrier.

The puck is dropped.

Kyrou handles the puck poorly until the Habs. Layup for Josh Anderson.

🚨

1-0 Montreal Canadiens

Goal: Josh Anderson (3). Assists: A. Newhook (2). Time: 4:29

🔋

Power play

Cole Caufield penalty for interference on Boone Jenner at 5:54

As the Capitals’ power play expires, Kyrou takes the puck to the middle of the ice and beats Dobes over the pad. This certainly makes up for his earlier mistake.

🚨

tie 1-1

Goal: Jordan Kyrou (2). Assists: C. Hutson (3), A. Tuch (1). Time: 7:56 a.m.

Lane Hutson with an incredible goal as the Caps make a line change. Wow.

🚨

2-1 Montreal Canadiens

Goal: Lane Hutson (3). Helpers: Z. Bolduc (2), A. Texier (3). Time: 11:15 a.m.

Alexandre Carrier tripped a penalty and Vincent Desharnais gave a roughing penalty at 12:59, putting the game at four on four for two minutes.

🔋

Power play

Lane Hutson holds a minor on Ryan Leonard at 17:46

Ivan Miroshnichenko scores on the power play in his season debut!

🚨

tie 2-2

PPG: Ivan Miroshnichenko (1). Assists: I. Protas (3). Time: 7:34 p.m.

At intermission: The match is tied 2-2. The shots on goal are tied 9-9. Top level hockey here.

2nd period

The puck is dropped.

Sourdif cruelly misses the net on a shot. Then Sourdif finds himself in the wide open home plate area and decides to drop a pass, which the Canadiens steal. Oh, very.

And now the hat trick of evil.

🦓

Numerical disadvantage

Justin Sourdif tripped a penalty at 4:34

Alex Tuch bails out Sourds, scoring shorthanded! The caps have their first lead.

🚨

3-2 Washington Capitals

SHG: Alex Tuch (4). Without help. Time: 6:16 a.m.

🔋

Power play

Josh Anderson holds a penalty against Dylan Strome at 7:36

Wide-open Anderson makes a centering pass from the corner boards past Lindgren with ease. It looked like a fire drill for the Caps defensively.

🚨

3-3 tie

Goal: Josh Anderson (4). Assists: A. Newhook (3). Time: 12:58 p.m.

Owen Beck beats Lindgren but his shot rings off the post.

Ivan Miroshnichenko blasts Juraj Slafkovský in the neutral zone with a big hit – shoulder to chest. Carrier attacks Miro. Juraj then slid into Wilson while skating on the ice, hitting his head on his legs.

The officials call Miroshnichenko for a five-minute major penalty so they can review the play. Slafkovský briefly ran the track, but he was back a minute later and doing well.

No major, the Caps get a power play after all of Montreal’s extracurricular activities.

🔋

Power play

Alexandre Carrier and Ivan Miroshnichenko get corresponding minors for brutality, Kaiden Guhle gets an additional minor at 15:42

Arber Xhekaj goes after Tom Wilson after Dobes freezes the puck and he takes an extra hit.

At intermission: Caps-Habs drew 3-3. The Canadians largely lead in shots now 21-14. Under the hood, there are worrying trends. The Caps haven’t created any high-danger chances at 5-on-5 and the Canadiens lead in scoring chances 24-5.

3rd Period

The puck is dropped.

The first half of the period is a very weak affair – lots of tight controls as both teams look for the next goal. Only five shots (3 WSH 2 MTL) between the two teams.

A point shot from Justin Holl goes in. I mean, who hasn’t had him score in back-to-back games? lmao

🚨

4-3 Washington Capitals

Goal: Justin Holl (2). Assists: I. Protas (4), A. Ovechkin (2). Time: 12:29 p.m.

Huge insurance goal from Tuch, it’s his second of the evening and his fifth in seven games, the most on the team.

🚨

5-3 Washington Capitals

Goal: Alex Tuch (5). Without help. Time: 5:05 p.m.

🦓

Numerical disadvantage

Dylan Strome hits Cole Caufield at 17:57

The Canadians hit a shot off the crossbar, but the officials looked to make sure.

🚨

5-4 Washington Capitals

PPG: Nick Suzuki (4). Assists: L. Hutson (6). Time: 6:21 p.m.

Tuch narrowly misses the hat trick by missing the empty net!

The selections win 5-4.

Jordan Kyrou breaks out and Alex Tuch continues to score in Capitals' tight win over Canadiens
