A YouTuber dissected an iPhone Duo and thinks he found the cause of crackgate

Social media and the iPhone Duo subreddit are full of reports of Apple’s foldable failing quickly and spectacularly. Some users report only having the phone for a few hours before the hinge seems to snag on something, then cracks and audibly breaks the screen. It is telling that the cracks all seem to occur in the same place.

YouTuber CuriousHagi was able to reproduce the cracked screen during durability testing of the iPhone Duo. Then he took it apart to try to find the culprit. What he discovered was that the Duo’s hinge is quite complex, consisting of a central gear-shaped hinge and two different types of connecting hinges.

The piece that broke was one of the links in the middle of the phone that happened to be thinner than the links below or above it, and it broke at a small notch where it would be weakest. He also found marks where the hinge met the backing plate, indicating where it might have become stuck.
