The New York Yankees were swept in the ALDS, losing 4-3 to the Tampa Bay Rays in Game 3 on Wednesday.
Manager Aaron Boone was feeling the effects:
However, he won’t garner much sympathy from Yankees fans – Boone isn’t a popular man in the Big Apple right now:
“Those are conversations for another day,” Boone told reporters Wednesday night when asked about his job security, which may have been true for him but certainly wasn’t true among Yankees fans.
In his nine seasons as Yankees manager, the team has yet to win a World Series title and has only appeared in the Fall Classic once (2024). The Bronx Bombers made the playoffs in eight of Boone’s nine seasons, but only advanced past the ALDS three times.
In some markets, this level of consistency would represent a memorable time. But given the Yankees’ historic pedigree — and their astronomical payroll, even if it no longer dominates the sport — expectations are much higher.
At this point, Yankees fans don’t seem inclined to give Boone the benefit of the doubt, even though the team is without injured superstar Aaron Judge. It’s hard to imagine general manager Brian Cashman will escape their wrath either. Yankees fans are ready to end the organization’s 17-year drought.
Whether ownership also focuses on the director and general manager as the main culprits in this regard remains to be seen.
