Adam Driver explained why he said yes to playing Mister Sinister in the ‘X-Men’ reboot after turning down numerous Marvel films over the years.
“I was a big (X-Men) fan. I mean, I was a fan of other things too, but this one seemed like the right time,” Driver said during a recent appearance on “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” Reflecting further on why he joined the project, Driver added, “It was really ‘X-Men,’ Jake Schreier, who is the director, his idea, and it’s Kevin Feige. It all just kind of fell into place. The script is really cool.”
Driver explained that he was very selective about joining the MCU because “a lot of people are going to watch it, and if it’s bad, you know, a lot of people will see that you’re bad. Plus, I don’t want to ruin it.”
Marvel head Kevin Feige recently told the “Happy Sad Confused” podcast that he had offered Driver so many Marvel roles that it had become somewhat of a “tradition” that when a new project was on the horizon, they would meet on Zoom about a role and Driver would turn it down.
“It’s no secret that we would love to (work with Adam),” Feige said. “But it’s a tradition to Zoom with him, and then he passes away. It’s a long-standing tradition. He couldn’t be more cordial. He’s usually upfront about how he feels.”
In the new “X-Men” movie, Driver will play Dr. Nathaniel Essex, aka Mister Sinister, a superintelligent telepath and shapeshifter. As the main antagonist of the film, he will face Sadie Sink as Jean Grey, Inde Navarrette as Rogue, Kit Connor as Cyclops, Christopher Abbott as Charles Xavier, Maya Boyd as Storm and Asa Germann as Angel.
