All offseason, New York Giants head coaches had hammered home the message to their quarterback: Protect yourself.
The Giants loved 2025 first-round pick Jaxson Dart’s toughness, and they built an offense with plays designed to exploit the math problem his mobility creates for defenses.

No one told Dart not to run. But coaches and front-office members alike kept reminding Dart through spring and summer to slide at run’s end. They reminded him to protect himself rather than lay his body on the line at comparatively inconsequential moments, as he had during his rookie year.
“You can’t just say, ‘Don’t run the football here because you could get hurt’ — you have to show him evidence,” offensive coordinator Matt Nagy told Yahoo Sports in June. “Where did you take the extra hits? Was it necessary?
“We showed him examples.”
And then a cruel irony unfolded: In the second game of Dart’s sophomore season, as he demonstrated the development of a passer cycling through his progressions, he suffered a season-ending injury anyway.

Sometimes, the violent game of football doesn’t care.
Dart wasn’t scrambling Monday night when, on the seventh snap of the game, he was crushed awkwardly. He wasn’t even escaping the pocket to throw on the run.
Dart was dropping back, and winding up for a well-placed throw to tight end Theo Johnson on third-and-8, when edge rusher Byron Young swarmed from his left side and outside linebacker Josaiah Stewart closed in from Dart’s right. As Young moved in for the tackle, Dart fell into Stewart.
Dart lay on the ground, clutching his left knee, before eventually limping off without the help of staff or a cart. He even returned to the sideline in a gray hoodie and black turtleneck after initial tests indicated that no, his requests to return that night would not be granted, but there was at least optimism about the duration and severity of his injury.

A Tuesday MRI proved more daunting, the specter of season-ending surgery suddenly looming over the Giants and their quarterback. By Wednesday, per multiple reports, the decision was made: Dart will undergo surgery to repair damage to his meniscus, MCL and PCL. His ACL is intact.
Head coach John Harbaugh, whose appreciation for Dart strongly swayed his decision to join the Giants in January, is left to pick up the pieces of an offense now in the hands of Jameis Winston.
How much does a head coach’s job change when his starting quarterback goes down?
“I think that’s a pretty self-evident answer, isn’t it?” Harbaugh told reporters Tuesday over Zoom, evolving to confirm the severity or rehabilitation timeline of Dart’s injury. “It’s an important position, obviously. That’s a pretty obvious answer.

A key reason Harbaugh took Giants job: Jaxson Dart
After the Baltimore Ravens fired Harbaugh in January after 18 seasons, the landscape of a favorable market emerged. In a rare year, 10 NFL teams moved on from their coaches after the 2025 NFL season.
Harbaugh was the most attractive candidate by many metrics. He would have his choice among several suitors.
So Harbaugh wasn’t going to team up with just any quarterback after enjoying success with two-time MVP Lamar Jackson. The Giants knew they needed to sell Harbaugh on their potential.

“We were trying to recruit him to come on a coaching visit,” Giants general manager Joe Schoen told Yahoo Sports in June. “He had whoever his army of people were watching the offense, watching the defense, schematically. Also watching the individual talents. We didn’t play Baltimore last year, so I’m not sure he realized how well Jaxson played throughout the season.
“I would say he was pleasantly surprised.”
Harbaugh met with Dart in person for about 45 minutes during his interview process, Schoen said. The two watched film together, discussing both scheme and culture.
“I think I learned just how charismatic (Dart) is and how much he really wants to win,” Harbaugh told Yahoo Sports of the meeting. “I also learned how dialed into what it takes (he is). He was asking me some really, really good questions about how we’re going to run things and I could just tell we’re going to think alike. …

“He’s all about doing what it takes.”
Harbaugh now needs to do what his job takes without his most important player.
What are the Giants losing in Dart?
Dart finished his rookie year completing 63.7% of his passes for 2,272, 15 touchdowns and 5 interceptions. He rushed for an additional 487 yards and nine scores, across his 14 total games that included 12 starts.
In a season-opening win against the Cowboys, Dart completed 79.3% of his pass attempts for 230 yards and 3 touchdowns while rushing 11 more times for 54 yards. The Giants did not turn over the ball in the 28-20 win.
Dart, whom coaches believed finished his rookie year with underrated anticipatory throwing, said he felt comfortable. Nagy praised his quarterback for his calm and composure making plays. Dart’s 134.2 passer rating, albeit in one game, marked the most efficient game of his career by 24 points. Dart exploited Cowboys’ weaknesses well, at one point targeting the left flat three times on the same series when he discerned the Giants’ favorable leverage.

The Rams’ defense would prove stiffer in a Week 2 “Monday Night Football” game, but Giants brass traveled to Los Angeles excited to see Dart rise to the occasion.
Instead, after five pass attempts in the first series, Dart was limping off. And while Winston was serviceable last season in two-and-a-half games of play, throwing for three touchdowns while scoring another two via rushing and receiving, he completed just 11 of 27 pass attempts (40.7%) for 111 yards, no scores and an interception in what became a 28-6 loss on Monday.
Harbaugh defended Winston, saying the team as a whole “didn’t play up to that level across the board.” A day after the loss, the coach continued to express faith in his quarterback.
“Absolute faith in all of our players,” Harbaugh said. “That’s why all the guys are here. Jameis is one of our guys who obviously is here for a reason. He’s a very good football player.”
Harbaugh: ‘If you get punched in the gut, are you going down?’
There’s reason to believe Winston’s 2026 season could unfold better than his initial start.

While Winston’s career has been characterized with entertaining highs and mind-boggling lows, there’s reason to believe he can improve from his first outing.
To start: Any quarterback receiving first-team snaps throughout the week will be better prepared to navigate an opponent than a quarterback thrust into game action. Winston’s difficulty transitioning could also reflect how different his play style is from that of Dart, for whom the Giants game plan vs. the Rams was designed. The Giants also struggled to run the ball against the Rams, mustering just 52 yards off 21 carries (2.5 yards per carry).
So while the Giants will look to tweak Winston’s decision-making, precision and patience on certain plays, expect them also to prepare a game plan less connecting on a quarterback’s dual-threat abilities than their plan last week. (In comparison, when Marcus Mariota replaced Washington Commanders quarterback Jayden Daniels against the Dallas Cowboys last weekend, Mariota’s mobility translated better to zone-read principles on which Daniels thrives.)
Another reason for short-term encouragement about the Giants’ chances to win without Dart: their schedule. Three of the Giants’ next five opponents are currently 0-2, beginning with the Tennessee Titans who visit Sunday on the Giants’ short week.
The other two are the Arizona Cardinals and New Orleans Saints, who have each split their first two contests.

The Giants have a chance to settle their offense and keep their season floor afloat.
Their ceiling, meanwhile, faces serious doubt.
There’s no question that Dart was the emotional and schematic leader of his offense and his team after his breakout rookie year and unique array of skills energized a franchise that has won just one playoff game since their Super Bowl campaign in the 2011 season.
The Giants have earned a playoff berth only once in their last nine tries. Their chance of a postseason run this season has taken a serious hit. ESPN’s Football Power Index pitted the Giants’ chances of making the playoffs at 43% after their Week 1 win vs. the Cowboys, only to plummet that chance to 1% after Dart’s injury paired with a Week 2 loss.

Harbaugh emphasized the Giants’ need to keep fighting.
“A gut punch — I mean, how many people face gut punches every single day?” Harbaugh asked.
He then quoted his father.
“If you get punched in the gut, are you going down? Are you going down? Are you going to crumble to the ground, as Jack Harbaugh would say, like a sack of sour apples and just fall to the ground and just burp away and wither away into the dust. Is that what you’re going to do?
“I don’t think so.”
