Alaska’s Ranked Choice Voting is on the ballot this year. Republicans want this to go away.

Alaska voters will decide next week for the second time in as many cycles whether to scramble the state’s ranked-choice voting system, as Republicans are worried it could cost them a close Senate race.

Along with high-profile statewide elections, Alaskans are voting on Ballot Measure 2, which would roll back a host of election reforms. voters approved in 2020including the state’s unique multiparty primaries and top-four ranked general elections.

A successful repeal of election reforms in Alaska could reshape how future races will be competitive in this politically idiosyncratic state — and be a boon for the national anti-ranked choice movement.

“Alaska is like this barometer, it’s a very independent state,” said Greg Powersconsultant for Repeal Now, the main group behind Ballot Measure 2. “I think Alaska’s rejection will send a message to people that says, ‘Hey, we tried it, stay away.’ And we think that’s a very good thing for the country.
