KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Cattle were on the loose in downtown Kansas City, Mo., after a tractor-trailer carrying 120 head of cattle crashed and overturned on the highway Sunday morning.
Shortly before 1 p.m., KCPD said all of the livestock had been found. The highway near I-29 and 71 remains closed.
All cattle found after tractor-trailer crashes, rollovers in downtown Kansas City
The Kansas City Fire Department said they responded to a two-vehicle crash on I-29 near Admiral Blvd. around 3 a.m. Sunday. One of these vehicles was an overturned tractor-trailer carrying 120 cattle.
Fire officials said one patient from each vehicle was taken to the hospital with injuries.
Some cattle on board did not survive, according to KCFD. Of the surviving cattle, some remained in the caravan, while others wandered around downtown KC, some even reaching KCK.
“We have received reports as far away as Pershing, Maine, and reports are that the KCK has received a few cattle calls,” said KCFD Battalion Chief Michael Hopkins.
Hopkins says KCPD has contacted resources to help combat the free-roaming livestock. KSHB crews watched as they attempted to fight over five cows in a yard near 13th and Brooklyn Ave. The owner woke up when police called for help to try to stop the cows from escaping the yard.

“I think I better go and let my brothers know that I probably won’t make it to church on time because I have cows in my backyard,” the neighbor said.
Alongside the real Kansas City cowboys were local cowboys who came to help the corral. Including young August, who was happy to see all the cows on her street safe and sound.
“We were looking for them and then we came here and the cow was magically saved,” August said.

Hopkins also says the crash spilled diesel onto the highway, which crews are working to clean up.
