Anthropic is struggling to secure enough cloud capacity from AWS, Google and Microsoft, which increasingly view maker Claude as a competitor rather than a customer, according to an S-1 filing disclosed to the Wall Street Journal.
The leaked filing adds color to figures reported by Reuters and the Financial Times in late September, including that Anthropic estimates it could spend more than $750 billion on cloud contracts, some of which include deals still under negotiation.
And yet, that is not enough. Anthropic rents its own data centers and works with third-party data center operators. But the company is concerned that these operators have a “limited operating history,” which could make them less reliable than hyperscalers.
Anthropic’s huge spending follows a first-half net loss of $80.7 billion. The company reported $16.3 billion in revenue during the same period, with just two customers accounting for about a fifth of sales, according to the WSJ report.
Building on previously reported catastrophic risk disclosures, the filing also warns that Anthropic could be held liable for damages caused by harmful AI behavior at a level that would exceed available insurance coverage.
Last week, the company told potential investors that revenue in the third quarter alone now reached $16.8 billion, up 45% from the previous quarter. Anthropic is reportedly aiming for an IPO in November.
Anthropic did not immediately respond to TechCrunch’s request for comment.
