According to Bavarian police, the fire in the Alpine resort – known as the “Eagle’s Nest” in English or “Kehlsteinhaus” in German – started on Friday evening.
A fire alarm was sounded around 9:15 p.m., with firefighters reporting “clearly visible” flames as they approached the site, finding it “completely on fire” when they arrived, police said.
“The firefighters’ extensive firefighting operations are continuing. So far, no one has been found inside the Kehlsteinhaus – at this stage, no one has been injured as a result of the fire,” a statement from the fire brigade said.
“Shortly after the start of the fire, a suspect was reported to investigators. This person was taken into custody. The question of whether the individual is linked to the fire is currently the subject of a criminal investigation,” the press release added.
More than 200 rescuers were deployed on site.
A no-fly zone for drones was also declared, while hikers were asked to avoid the area, according to police.
The building, completed in 1938, was designed as a retreat for Nazi officials, although it was rarely used by Hitler himself.
This is a developing story. Please come back here for more details.
