Australian Labor spent A$2.6 million to oust two Greens rivals from parliament

CANBERRA — Labor spent A$1.3 million on each of the two inner-city Brisbane seats held by the Greens, including its successful bid to oust Prime Minister antagonist Max Chandler-Mather from Parliament.

Just months after the Albanian government legislated to cap election spending by $800,000 per seat, but before the new law took effect, Labor spent half a million dollars more to oust power. Chandler Mather from his Griffith seat. The party matched these expenses to defeat Stephen Bates in the neighboring seat of Brisbane.

The new Labor Party campaign spending statistics are contained in the Commonwealth’s defense of a legal challenge brought by two former independent MPs against spending and donation caps, obtained from the High Court by POLITICO.

In February 2025, Labor and the Coalition joined forces to pass a bill to cap political donations, increase public funding and limit election spending, measures which will come into force in 2027.
