Will author Andy Weir ever write a sequel to “Project Hail Mary?” » That remains to be seen, but he is not opposed to it. Weir only has one very important condition to make this a reality.
Starring Ryan Gosling in the lead role, the film adaptation of “Project Hail Mary” made enough money at the box office to warrant a sequel, grossing $684 million worldwide. This will undoubtedly be part of the awards season conversations as well. Weir’s publishing agents and the folks at Amazon MGM Studios would probably love to pull the trigger on a follow-up.
Speaking recently to /Film’s Jeremy Mathai, Weir discussed the possibility of a sequel to his 2021 novel, which went on to inspire this year’s hit film. For Weir, it all comes down to having a good enough idea. Anything less and he’s content to leave it alone. Here’s what he had to say about it:
“I’d be happy to do a sequel to ‘Project Hail Mary’ if I have a good idea for it, and I feel like I’ve had some good ideas, but not very good ones. I’d rather not make a sequel at all than have one that’s average. I’m also not going to try to force it. I’m not going to say ‘I have to have an idea for a sequel because in a few years maybe Ryan won’t want to make another one.'” a movie like this. I have to No. If I have a cool idea for a sequel, I’ll workshop it.
The end of “Project Hail May” reveals what happens to Grace and Rocky. It’s a complete ending, which doesn’t require a sequel. This is where the idea of tracking gets tricky.
Andy Weir takes the prospect of a Hail Mary Project sequel very seriously
The book and film focus on Ryland Grace, a science teacher, who wakes up in space with no memory of how he got there. He discovers that he must solve a complex problem that is causing the sun on Earth to disappear. If he fails, humanity perishes. “Project Hail Mary” makes a few changes from the original book, but for the most part it is very faithful.
That said, a sequel is a difficult prospect because the “Project Hail Mary” movie changes the books’ perfect ending (in a good way). As the man behind the book, Andy Weir would surely stick to his text rather than the film. So if he were to write a sequel and Amazon decided to adapt it, they would have to deal with Weir jumping from his ending rather than the end of the film. But it’s a relatively minor problem that could surely be fixed.
At the moment, it doesn’t seem like this is something anyone needs to worry about anytime soon. Weir further confirmed to /Film that “At the moment, the book I’m working on is another standalone novel, not a sequel to anything.” » Weir’s next book could tackle the hot topic of artificial intelligence, but this has not yet been confirmed. For the most part, what he’s working on remains a big mystery.
You can grab “Project Hail Mary” on 4K, Blu-ray, or DVD from Amazon.
