Battlefield 6 criticized for slipping in more slops: ‘Charging players dollars for AI-generated content is a complete lack of respect’

Battlefield 6 Season 5, “Siege of Vegas,” was released earlier this week and reactions so far have been mixed. Among the high points is Area 51, a new map that fans have generally hailed as one of the best in the game. Among the low points is another set of Season Pass cosmetics that have players’ genAI alarms ringing.

These cosmetics include a guy with a bunch of extra magazines attached to his vest, one with five guns in his holster, and someone with a security patch on his arm that says “Security.” “Why does this guy have FIVE guns on him?” a fan wrote on the Battlefield 6 subreddit earlier this week. “This new Season 5 battle pass skin has five identical guns in its kit. The squeaky mask is one thing, but who at BF Studios approves of these stupid character designs?”

Another wrote: “The magazine design on the second guy makes absolutely no sense lol, it looks like the AI generated one…then there’s the guy with the five guns, the most egregious one is the fucking misspelled security patch lol.”

Several articles on the topic have exploded with thousands of upvotes and comments since Season 5 went live. To add insult to injury, the chaotic designs were being sold as part of the season pass. “Charging players $$$ for AI-generated content is absolute disrespect,” another thread in the subreddit reads.

While there is no confirmation that the designs are the result of genAI, it wouldn’t be the first time Battlefield 6 was caught getting careless. EA’s hit shooter shipped seemingly AI-generated cosmetics just months after the game’s launch and only ended up patching them months later. This probably didn’t help some Battlefield developers were fired earlier this year, even as EA executives raked in millions in a highly leveraged sale to Saudi Arabia.

And even if the developers ultimately decide to leave designs like the five-gun one intact, things like the misspelled arm patch aren’t easy to fix either. After all, it’s not just a misspelling of the word “security”, the word “security” is placed right above the words “security operator”. I don’t think any human artist would have shipped that by accident. At least, not one that wasn’t overworked with dwindling staff numbers and an unrealistic content roadmap.
