Bears rule out Kyle Monangai for Week 5

The Bears will not have running back Kyle Monangai for Sunday’s game against the Packers.

Head coach Ben Johnson told reporters earlier this week that Monangai’s thumb injury was not serious, but a toe injury turned out to be a more serious problem. Johnson said during his Friday press conference that Monangai was in a boot due to his injury and would miss the game as a result.

Monangai rushed 30 times for 146 yards and two touchdowns in last Sunday’s 23-12 win over the Jets. Johnson said he plans to move forward week to week.

The injury opens the door for D’Andre Swift to return to the primary running back position. Swift was benched after fumbling for the second time this season in the third quarter last Sunday and he said this week that his problems holding the ball were “it’s over now.” With Monangai out, he will have the opportunity to prove that is the case.
