Michael Cooper, also known as “Coach Coop,” has died. Coach Coop was a beloved part of Southeast Raleigh Magnet High School (SRMHS), where he was an integral part of their football program.
Coach Coop was described as a man who was “more than just ‘coach’.” He was a mentor, a leader, a father figure and someone who believed in our young men both on and off the field.
His reach seems to have extended far beyond the realm of SRMHS, as tributes began to pour in from other schools, teams and students who worked with him in the past.
In honor of Coach Coop, helmet stickers were created for the Southeast Raleigh HS football team to wear during their games.
SRMHS Principal George Harden released a letter to parents and students that stated in part: “Coach Cooper was an important part of our school, our football program and the lives of many of our students and staff. His passing will undoubtedly bring a range of emotions, questions and concerns for our Bulldog family. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family, loved ones and everyone affected by this immense loss.
Students and parents were also encouraged to take time to grieve and speak to a mental health counselor if they were struggling.
The Southeast Raleigh Bulldogs and GTFC are gearing up to head toward a state championship and say they are fueled by the impact Coach Coop left.
