Bears head coach Ben Johnson benched quarterback Tyson Bagent in today’s loss to the Packers, and he said afterward that Bagent was out throughout the game.
Bagent struggled throughout the game, but Johnson said he wasn’t thinking about benching Bagent until the Bears’ final offensive play of the third quarter, when Bagent threw his second interception of the game. After that, Johnson scored Case Keenum for the fourth quarter.
“We just wanted a little spark,” Johnson said. “Tyson, I never felt like I had any rhythm here today. We’ll see why that was the case. The second interception happened and we just thought, let’s give Case a chance and see if we get different results.”
Johnson declared starting quarterback Caleb Williams could be exonerated from his hamstring injury to play next week against the Falcons. If Williams is not cleared, it is not yet clear whether Bagent or Keenum will get the call. Johnson said the coaching staff will evaluate that question this week.
