Bernie Sanders May Soon Have a Powerful Perch to Help Shape 2028

Bernie Sanders he probably won’t be president. But he may be about to get one last chance to define his legacy in Washington.

The Vermont independent is set to lead the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee if Democrats succeed in flipping the Senate next month — giving the 85-year-old left-wing icon a powerful perch he could use to promote his political movement and shape a 2028 presidential run in which he has indicated he is unlikely to run.

He will also have to balance the strong desire of his colleagues to occupy the position of president that of Donald Trump the responsible administration, in particular the undersecretary of the Department of Health and Human Services Robert F. Kennedy Jr.. But he makes clear that he plans to use his power to shine a light on systemic problems that go beyond the operation of a single agency.

“If I have anything to say about it…the Democratic Party’s agenda is going to be extremely bold. It’s going to come with high costs,” Sanders said when asked how he plans to use his future hammer. “Super PACs will no longer drive the agenda. We will do what the American people want.”
